High School sports play a huge role in some students’ lives. Their sport makes them their own unique self. Coaches also play a huge role in shaping an athlete, both physically and mentally. All coaches have a different coaching style, and with the new Stafford High School Boys Basketball coach, Stephen Hibberd, his coaching style is eager to be unraveled.
On Monday, October 6th Stafford High school students received an email from Hibberd. He stated in the email that he was very excited to be the new coach, and that he can’t wait to see the prospective players in person.
Many great coaches in sports come from experience. They might have played the sport in their youth, or fell in love with it but never actually got the chance to play. stated freshman Alex Roberts. Most coaches have a main goal which is to give each player an opportunity at succeeding.
This vital relationship is a key component no matter the age group, competitive level, and sport. Every coach, in some measure, leaves a memorable mark on their student-athletes. Consistency is a non-negotiable trait in effective coaching. A coach must show perseverance and dedication, especially when guiding beginners or navigating difficult seasons. Freshman Tyler Tryon said “ Whenever I mess up during a drill, instead of my coach getting mad, he finds a way for me to understand, so I can properly execute the drill.”
This perseverance is mirrored by the athletes themselves, who must learn to endure hardships, setbacks, and rigorous training to achieve their potential.
Basketball tryouts were held November 10-12, which marked the start of the new basketball season. During athletic tryouts, coaches look for well rounded players, not just on the court or field, but in the classrooms. Sophomore Luke Flynn stated “One thing that our new coach does differently is we are required to dress up on game day in business casual outfits. I like it because it gives off a professional look.” Coaches look for players to represent their team in a positive manner.

Everyone has their own way of doing things. Whether it is from the way they tie their shoes, or the way they dress, it gets the job done. Each coach has their own coaching style. Some may want to watch more film of their opponents, while others may want to do more strength training or run plays. But behind each coach’s coaching style is a reason. And with a new set of eyes for the program comes formal dressing, class expectations, and team relationships that are all being demonstrated with the start of the 2025-2026 Boys Basketball season.
