Stafford High Community on Edge as May 20th threat looms

The swift removal of hateful graffiti has done little to ease the anxiety felt among the student body.
Facebook and other social media platforms have been circulating images of graffiti in two of the mens bathrooms at SHS.

A disturbing discovery was found in the boys bathroom that had administration, staff and students on edge. Graffiti entailing not only racially insensitive language and symbols, but also threats to the lives at Stafford High School, was found by a student. The graffiti was located on the boy’s 2nd and 3rd floor restroom walls.

According to Chelsea Tryon, principal of SHS, her staff responded quickly and accordingly after the report was made. “We take this matter very seriously,” Tryon said in an email to the community. “The graffiti was removed promptly, and school administrators began an immediate investigation in coordination with our Safety and Security team.” Along with this, Stafford County’s Sheriff’s office is also involved, ensuring all hands are on deck.

Investigation efforts have gone as far as handwriting analysis, and while it has not yet been confirmed if the threat was credible, it is not something the school has taken lightly. Tryon has also emphasized that any behavior involving threats or that targets others will lead to the maximum school punishment, with the potential involvement of law enforcement.

After the email was sent out, instagram stories and reposts by SHS Students immediately followed. “I read that with a straight face. It’s sad to say but I wasn’t surprised.” Gabby Egejuru expressed when asked about her social media repost. Once these emotions began for students the reposts didn’t stop.

To be expected, this disruption has sparked concern throughout the entire student body. Students have contemplated the idea of wanting to attend school on the 20th. There was an extra concern for the minority students of SHS who have made claims that the graffiti deeply affected their sense of safety at school.

J’nai Poteat, a junior at Stafford High School explained how the incident has affected herself and her peers. “Right now, there is a heavy sense of fear and deep distrust among students. Seeing this graffiti creates an environment of high anxiety.”

As the investigation continues, the final outcome remains a question mark. For Jay Daniels, Junior at Stafford High School, peace of mind is the ultimate goal. “The thing that would make me feel the most secure is either knowing whoever wrote it is found or if they cancel school on May 20th,” Daniels shared.

Although school officials acted swiftly, this incident has left a lasting effect on many students that are unsettled and searching for reassurance. The investigation remains ongoing, students, staff, and families will continue waiting for their answers with the hope of a safer and more united school environment in the future.

Gabby Egejuru explains “I am still worried for my safety and my friends safety, cause me and my friends are also people of color.”
