From awkward replies to unexpected reconnections, Stafford students share their take on the spooky social experiment that is National Text Your Ex Day.
Oops!...I Texted It Again

Forget haunted houses, the scariest thing to conjure up in the cauldron this Halloween season is a reply from a past love. For many, National Text Your Ex Day proves that some spirits are best left buried. But if you’re like me, we like to pull out our ghost hunting gear and explore the super natural.

National Text Your Ex Day begins on October 30th, Spooky right?  What’s scarier than facing a ghost from your past? The day started as a silly idea online, but now it’s a nationwide dare: text your ex and see what happens. Some people use it to reconnect, some to stir up old chaos, and some people wisely stay away and let bygones be bygones.

Speaking from experience, National Text Your Ex Day is surprisingly tempting; even for someone like me, whose ex was absolutely insane (lets just say texting them is like poking a hornet’s nest). Sure, it could get messy, but that’s part of the fun. There’s something oddly thrilling about seeing how someone from your past reacts to the awkward texts. Like the accidental laughs, and the “did that really just happen?” moments. Think of it like biting into a chocolate-covered eyeball. It looks scary, might be a little gross, but you can’t help yourself from taking a bite.

To get an understanding of how others feel about this National Day, I asked a few Stafford High School students how they felt about texting their exes.

One anonymous student admitted to me that they’ve texted an ex before, but not exactly for fun. “Yes, because I needed to clear up drama with him and rumors that circulated between us – and it was fine, but he was cold and closed off,” They said. When asked about the most awkward response they’ve ever gotten, they replied “He replied to my message with a thumbs up when saying I hope he’s doing well”.

For this person, this day is best left ignored. “Better left in the past,” They replied, adding that if texting their ex was a Halloween trick or treat, it would be a trick.

On the other hand, Nicholas Applebee, Stafford High School student, had a different take. “Yes I have texted an ex, and it was mostly pleasant due to the both of us still liking each other,” he explained. He sees the value in reaching out, saying, “It is a good idea because you get to find out what you did wrong and grow from your mistakes.”

So whether you see it as a trick, a treat, or a terrifying mistake, National Text Your Ex Day is a reminder that sometimes the past should stay six feet under. For those daring enough to hit “Send,” just remember — not every ghost wants to be summoned.
