Students packed in the hallways.

Students push and shove through a tight, claustrophobic squeeze called the school hallways. With no room to grow – literally – the student body is bursting the seams of a school that was built in haste, and not for a rapidly growing population.

The 2022-2023 school year is packed, our building at a whopping 96% capacity. The powers that be have already admitted that trailers will be coming as Stafford County Public Schools struggles to find a solution to the issue.

The sophomore student body took the school population by storm in 2021, a whopping 650 students according to Principal Allen Hicks.

“I just think we’re a little slow on building schools,” Principal Hicks stated in a brief interview about the overcrowding. Stafford County Public Schools currently has five current schools including SHS, with Mountain View being the most crowded. Stafford is rushing to build a school in the eastern Stafford area by Fall 2026. “We could expect about 2400 students, we expect more kids every year”, Hicks said.

When the school was closed due to the pandemic in 2020 –  Principal Hicks’ first year with the school – it was hard to see the true capacity of the school with no students being in the building.

“This year it’s really noticeable,” Mr. Hicks said. When asked if we could expect any relief from crowding, Mr. Hicks responded with, “There’s really not much we can do”.

Stafford High is now in the second quarter, and only time will tell what we can expect for the upcoming years.
