Some people agree that phones are a huge problem when it comes to education and that they can affect learning sometimes. Was taking them away fully the right thing to do with the kind of world we live in today?
Everyday students are getting their phones taken away, because they don’t simply don’t agree with nor like the rule. They thought it would help students learn better, but even after the rule was enforced, some students still don’t engage in learning. They can’t try to take something fully away that this generation basically revolves around. Phones are a small part of life in a compact device. It was also put in place to stop meetings from happening in the bathrooms and more time in class. The meetings are never going to end because students still arrange times to go beforehand.
The main place phones should be limited is in classrooms, because students are being taught and they need all of their attention into learning. They should be allowed in the halls and at lunch because it is not considered educational time. Students should also be allowed to use Bluetooth headphones as long as they’re on task. Bluetooth devices can’t do the same things phones can, as some admin think they can, and listening to music sometimes helps people focus better. As for the Apple and Smart watches, they should be allowed as well because they can’t do much of anything either. They are a better and quicker way for emergencies instead of kids having to pull phones out.
In school today there are a lot of school shootings and major emergencies happening, but schools focus too much on phones rather than safety. Daniels went on to say “they should be away while learning, but I don’t understand why we can’t have them in the halls and at lunch.”
There are lots of students who are also antisocial. Being on their phones in big crowds rather than engaging in conversation is more comfortable to them. Big groups of students engaging are only going to cause more arguments and may cause more traffic to build up in the halls. Why make a rule that could only make society and our school’s as a whole worse?
Another big thing is not being able to capture memories anymore like pep rallies, spirit days, and funny moments. At pep rallies the laughs and joy while playing games and getting to hang with friends. The fun times dressing up on spirit days seeing all the different outfits put together. Even the funny moments students have throughout the day with friends and teachers. People move and students graduate every year. They won’t even be able to look back at all the fun memories they had in school throughout these years.
Aniiya Carter, another Sophomore at Stafford High School, said “I don’t agree with not being able to have our phones in the hallway and at lunch along with the use of headphones. I understand personal laptops are not being allowed though because some students go on non educational programs.” Students have so much free time in the halls and at lunch. Why can’t they use that time to take a break and relax on their phones? Like Aniiya said, laptops shouldn’t be allowed because students are not being productive. Chromebooks though can also cause students to be unproductive as well.
Now there are pros that can go along with this rule too that some may agree on. Sophomore at Stafford High School, Ta’layah Davis says “I think that this rule has helped a lot of us focus and become better as students.” Most students wouldn’t get any work done by just sitting on their phone all class. In class the teachers should get the same amount of respect and attention they give you. You’re not really getting an understanding of the lesson if you just use your phone the whole time. If students use their phones during class work they could just be searching up answers, therefore not showing their teachers what they actually know.
Although phones can affect students’ focus and grades. It shouldn’t be removed fully for safety reasons, students’ having freetime, and antisocial tendencies that the cell phones soothe. Overall all electronics should be away during learning time, but allowed in the hallways, lunch, and when they have finished their work.
