When celebrities hit send on a tweet, they often have no idea that it will come back years later and haunt them, therefore ruining their perfect reputation. Digital footprints are real. Just because the tweet was posted years ago, doesn’t mean someone won’t find it to ruin your life.
The biggest twitter scandal to break in recent weeks was Brooke Schofields tweets that were posted in 2013. It consisted of her talking about a very sensitive topic, Trayvon Martin; she was victimizing police officer George Zimmerman for shooting an innocent man.
Pull out quote-brookes tweet ¨ Guarantee if zimmerman shot a white guy this wouldn’t even be a story. NEWS FLASH THIS WASN’T A CRIME OF RACISM IT WAS SELF DEFENSE¨
In her 10 minute apology video on tik tok, she expressed that she grew up with very ‘conservative’ grandparents and that’s why she thought that way. Though there really is no excuse for that. The most logical thing she could have done was to do research before she said anything about the case. If she would’ve done that, She wouldn’t be in this position right now.
Influencer, James Charles, posted a tweet in 2017 saying, ¨ I can’t believe we’re going to Africa today omg what if we get ebola? ¨James we’re fine we could have gotten it at chipotle last year…..¨ said Charles.
With this tweet, people believed that he was insinuating that all people from the continent have the deadly disease. Days later he said, “Regardless of my intentions, words have consequences. I take full responsibility and will learn to do better,¨ but honestly what did he expect? There’s no other way that tweet can be interpreted, and he should’ve seen that the wording of the tweet was offensive.
This is merely the latest in a string of tweets that came back to haunt celebrities. All these situations have ended the same, ruining the reputation each tried to portray to others, being a good person.
Celebrities do need to be held more accountable for these types of scandals. Who knows how many more celebrities have hidden offensive posts on their social media page. It’s better for celebrities to hold themselves accountable for their actions.
Needless to say, No one is safe. People will dig up something that was posted years ago and hold it against you until the end of time. Because if you need a reminder, nothing ever really deletes off the internet, whatever you post will follow you for the rest of your life.
